Daniel Hewlette Company News

Last April our CEO, Earl Hewlette, was featured as a speaker at TEDx Charleston talking about the TerrePURE® technology creating chaos in a traditional industry.

Check out the video, then learn a bit about TED below!

TEDx is an offshoot of TED, “a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com.”

“The purpose of TEDxCharleston is to gather inspiring people with diverse ideas to share the many untold stories of Charleston’s thinkers, visionaries and fascinating teachers. We provide a setting where new connections, partnerships, and opportunities can be forged, where we honor the past while bringing forth something new for consideration and action.”

Story on NPR

Daniel Hewlette Company News

This past weekend we were featured on NPR, National Public Radio!

The story, by Cass Herrington of WNIN Evansville, IN, features master distiller Charles Medley, Terressentia CEO Earl Hewlette, and professional taste tester Tom Fischer. It’s a great snapshot of our TerrePURE® technology and entry into Kentucky via our recently-acquired Owensboro, Kentucky facility (renovations now underway!).

Kentucky Distillery Acquisition

Daniel Hewlette Company News

As of May 5th, 2014, we are the proud owners of the old Charles Medley Distillery in historic Owensboro, Kentucky.

To purchase the facility we formed a subsidiary called TerrePURE® Kentucky Distillers, which you will surely see in some of the news stories that may pop up (rest assured, we are working on a more graceful name for the facility itself).

There has been a distillery on this site since 1885, then known as the “Green River Distillery.” The Green River Distillery unfortunately burned to the ground in 1918, just as the prohibition movement was gaining steam. Luckily, prohibition’s end in 1933 paved the way for the existing facility’s construction in 1936. In 1940 the Medley family purchased the facility and distilled fine whiskey until 1993.

In 2007 it was sold to Angostura and renamed “Charles Medley Distillers Kentucky,” after master distiller Charles Medley. Angostura started some renovations in 2008, but failed to bring it back into operating condition before their parent company, CL Financial, ran into some financial difficulties, forcing them to sell the property.

Thats where Terressentia comes in. We’ve been working on the acquisition for the last 6 months and are thrilled to see it finalized today. From here we plan on spending several million dollars to renovate the facility, bringing it back to its former glory and bringing the thriving bourbon industry back to Owensboro.

Current plans target a production capacity of around 2 million proof gallons of bourbon per year, though we will likely produce some other whiskey products as well. With seven aging warehouses on-site, each with a capacity of around 20,000 barrels, the facility has a lot of potential.

Of course we will also be bringing our TerrePURE® technology to the facility as well, which will allow us to share the fruits of our renovation labor with the public in record time. Renovations are planned to start in 2015 and take about 12-18 months.

Terressentia Founder Passes Away

In Memoriam

O.Z. "Ty" Tyler

O.Z. “Ty” Tyler

Ty Tyler, our company founder and co-inventor of patented TerrePURE® technology, passed away at age 79 on January 6th, 2014.

Ty earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and received his Masters in Business Administration from Tulane University. He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in the Chemical Corps on Bikini Atoll and Eniwetok, where he was involved in the testing and transportation of the Hydrogen bomb.

Some of Ty’s other lifetime achievements include the patented coating that eliminated the metallic taste of soft drinks stored in cans, indoor-outdoor carpeting, washable wallpaper, and outdoor latex paint.

However TerrePURE® was a lifelong dream of Ty’s and has become his crowning achievement. This innovation has been validated by the countless medals TerrePURE processed spirits have won; the rapid, worldwide industry acceptance it has achieved as a suitable alternative to extensive barrel aging of whiskeys; and the continued explosive growth of the company he founded. We strive everyday to continue developing the company in a way that would make him proud.

His stepson and co-inventor of the TerrePURE® process, Edward Bailey, remains active in the company, leading our research and development projects. He continues Ty’s legacy of invention and innovation, constantly working to improve and expand our patented machines.

Ty’s unflappable positive disposition and ability to capture a person’s spirit in poetry were among the many qualities those who knew him will always remember. He was a man of great love and generosity and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all of us at Terressentia.
